Brutus (Yearling Belgian Draft)
Our rescue agreed to step up for Brutus when nobody else would. He was dumped at a kill pen with a severe respiratory infection and other unknowns. He is just a yearling. We estimate him to be around 1 year old. He was bred by the Amish who were using him to drive at this young age. The left side of the face is swollen and he is having a real difficulty breathing. If you saw the video on social media, you probably heard how labored his breathing really is.
We have consulted with multiple vets. We understand that surgery is a very likely needed outcome. We had great difficulty getting him accepted into any emergency clinics due to it being foaling season. He had no chance of being seen at the kill pen and could have very possibly died if we had not rescued him immediately. He is already looking much brighter simply by being away from the kill pen. He is eating, drinking, and enjoying attention from the wonderful quarantine people.
UPDATE!
We took Brutus to get his surgery done at VA tech in Leesburg, VA. The wonderful team there informed us that the mass was not cancer but a really bad cyst blocking 80% of his airway. They successfully removed the mass and gave us medication for his pneumonia. 6 months later, here is what Baby Brutus looks like! You can see how he has filled out. Now he gets to live the rest of his life at Bluey’s with brothers and sisters and will never have to pull a cart ever again!
